Age UK is an organisation whose aim is to improve the later life of all people
through the use of advice, campaigning, research, products and training.
Age UK was formerly known as Age Concern, an organisation that has been in existence
since the 1970s after it became fully independent of government. Throughout its
history Age UK/ Age Concern has often worked in conjunction with Help the Aged
in campaigning against areas such as elder abuse and in 1983 they joined along
with other organisations to form the international charity HelpAge.
Age UK receive Government and National lottery funding alongside the money they
raise via donations from individuals, companies and charitable trusts. Age UK then grants this money out (several million pounds per year) to other charities that are working to provide care for and improve the lives of the elderly.
AgeUK main method of operation other than grants is by doing research into what problems the elderly can face, running campaigns to improve services and by
giving out information to those who are unsure or not utilising their rights
fully. Age UK achieve this by engaging with a diverse range of people in later
life to identify problems and deliver trusted information to millions of people
Locally Age UK aim to provide information, advocacy and advice services, promote and
provide services to tackle problems such as isolation and healthy ageing,
support the elderly so that when possible they can remain independent in their
own homes and by training people in later life to make the best out of modern
